5) It's always a good idea to review a selection of financial documents for a church going back 20 years. See where the spending has gone. In the case of Westwood, discover where the spending has not gone.
3) Pay attention to what they avoid or never talk about.
1) IMPORTANT: Carefully read the membership "covenant." You'll not only be absolutely shocked any Christian would sign it but also know a lot about how this place is run. I think you'll have an aha moment as well as look for an exit door.
I regret spending so many years at Westwood and believing I belonged there when I was only kept around because the important families liked me. When they didn't want me around anymore, I was gone. Westwood has damaged my faith in the church.
In my opinion, Westwood General Baptist church, on Evansville Indiana's West side, isn't good for your spiritual health. Don't make the mistake of walking in here and giving them a chance thinking the bad reviews of this place must be wrong. Other insider reviews were once posted here with more damaging info.
I think the term,"Christians shoot their wounded,"must have orginated from someone who attended Westwood. They're great at finding the lost and bringing them in and making them feel loved, making them feel like family, but after that, if you have a serious issue you need help with involving one of the powerful families, you're on your own. They assign deacons to everyone but my deacon--well, he never made an attempt. I think the deacons are less to minister and more to keep people in line and make sure they don't rock the boat and upset the important people of the church. There are some very cold people there who make sure peace is kept among the ranks. They are great actors and you may be there for years and never upset the anointed ones, but watch out if you ever do.
A third former member told me they were very happy elsewhere and they had left Westwood, not long, after a group of "leaders" went to California and came back all excited after visiting Saddleback / Rick Warren's church. This group of "leaders" returned from California and then proceeded to change many things at Westwood. This former member appeared to have low regard for one of the people that has set himself up as the head of the Westwood church decision makers and laughed that that person was making so many decisions at Westwood.
(John chapter 7:8-10). Jesus had to remain sinless to be a perfect sacrifice for our sins. Modern translations want to make Jesus out to be a sinner when they translate from Vatican picked manuscripts.
4.) Regardless of where you attend, memorize scripture such as: 2nd Corinthians 11:14,15
Not surprising that one of the five star ratings on this page is from Marjorie, the pastor's wife. Job security I guess.
There's so much wrong with Westwood. That's why they are "marked" to warn others as the Bible says one should do.
It surprises me that they never tell people how to go to heaven. There's never an invitation. Any mention of Hell or Heaven borders on never happening. As one of the long time former members told me "THEY DO NOT CARE." Other former members came up to me and abruptly suggested going elsewhere. They quickly walked away without further details.
2) Listen to 5-10 of their on-line sermons before going.
Also: compare Luke 23:42, 1 Cor. 1:18, Mark 10:24, Acts 3:26 to KJV.
"Religious community in words, hands & heart that make you feel welcome with the Gospel and involved with brothers on need as orphans or widows at any time "
I was really intrigued by the other reviews on this page, but my experience was much different. I no longer go to Westwood because of my change in occupation, but I have gained many deep and genuine friendships from going here. I have been greatly blessed with the emphasis of continual discipleship and fellowship between church members and attendees throughout the week. I really felt like I was part of a family when I went here. I was able to be transparent with my sin issues and did not feel condemned, but gently restored. I would hope that people would give Westwood a try and make an effort to know the elders and pastor. This church is also listed on 9marks church finder map as being a good church that they validate. It's worth your time.
Great people, great pastor. Preaching is done from the scriptures and not from someone's opinion.
Suggestions for anyone considering attending Westwood:
I don't consider this a Christian church. Many of the godly Christian members left this place years ago. Others were pushed out by a couple of families that control this place.
6) They are using and selling the ESV Bible, one of the many Vatican influenced perversions of scripture. The corrupt Vatican influenced translations, make Jesus sound like He lied to his brothers
